History of Highland Cattle

Highland Cattle originate from the rough country of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The grand old breed, famous for its hardiness and looks, can be traced back several hundred years.

The first Herdbook of Highland Cattle was issued in 1885 by the Highland Cattle Society of Scotland.

Highland Cattle in Australia

The first Highland Cattle were imported into Australia by Scottish migrants in the mid 19th century. However, due to small numbers and no new imports the breed died out.
In the 1950's the breed took a new start and in 1988 the Australian Highland Cattle Society was formed.

Purebred or Fullblood ?

The Highland Cattle Society of Scotland defines the term purebred for cattle whose parentage can be traced back in the herdbook. Inspected animals of uncertain parentage may be included in the appendices of the herdbook but are not considered purebred.

As per definition of the Australian Highland Cattle Society Highland cross bred cattle of fourth generation and onwards are considered as purebred. Hence, the herdbook of the Australian Highland Cattle Society is not recognised by overseas Societies.

The term Fullblood Highland Cattle was created for Highlanders that can be traced back to their purebred overseas ancestors. In Australia fullblood Highland Cattle are bred by a small number of breeders, including Michèle and Clemens Unger of Duel M Highland Cattle.
